Cognitive Load In UI/UX Design
At my previous job, one of the most important things we had to understand and have a firm grasp of is cognitive load. I came across this article yesterday that explains it from a UI/UX perspective.
Summary: Cognitive load refers to the mental effort and resources required to process information and complete tasks.
This is true for any Ui design. If we use weird fonts, bright colours, cluttered designs….we overload the users processing capacity and reduce the actions performed by users. We confuse them and eventually, this can lead to uninstalling an app or leaving a website never to return. Sometimes we think Ui/ux design is about the user journey or the way it looks but we forget about simple subconscious behaviours that determine how our designs will be interacted with. I’ve seen countless portfolios where this simple rule of cognitive load is ignored.
So I wanted to remind you all that when you design, remember Jakobs Law! It can only make your designs better!
